Japan

Japan is where dizzyingly fast-paced cities meet ancient traditions, where glitzy new technology meets a deep-seated reverence for nature, and where vibrant nightlife meets the serenity of zen gardens. Japan is a study in contrasts, and therein lies its charm.

From Tokyo’s pulsating shopping districts to Kyoto’s ancient temples, Japan’s major cities are hotbeds of art and culture. You could check out art in cool galleries or track down anime robot installations in the street, you could meditate in tranquil Shinto shrines and sample some of the freshest flavours and most innovative dishes.

Here in the far east, nature is sacred; it is mountains and trees and rivers that are worshipped. Japanese culture revolves around these entities, whether it is the magical ritual of hanami, or cherry blossom viewing, or the therapeutic practice of visiting onsen, or natural hot springs, to soak. Come with us to the mystical land of the rising sun, and we’ll take you from beautiful alpine slopes to cozy traditional Ryokan inns for an unforgettable holiday.

Traditional Homes of the Shirakawa-go Village

Gassho-zukuri means "constructed like hands in prayer", and the Shirakawa-go village is famous for its 250-year-old farmhouses built in the traditional style. These large wooden houses have steep-thatched roofs, designed to withstand heavy snow, and the village is dotted with several of these old-world structures. Take a walk around the area to see this unique architectural style.

Seven Stars Luxury Train through Kyushu

Journey through the beautiful island of Kyushu in classic style, aboard the Orient Express of the east. The Seven Stars train showcases Kyushu’s most stunning views - rolling green hills, shimmering coastline, rustic countryside - alongside dedicated service and sheer splendour. You’ll have a fabulous on board suite, a dedicated lounge and luxurious dining cars as you discover Kyushu by train at a leisurely pace.

Hokkaido Wilderness Trails

The island of Hokkaido is home to stunning natural landscapes: wetlands and forests, mountains and crater lakes. On a small group guided tour, you’ll go from the Pacific Coast to nature reserves with brown bears, you’ll walk along serene wilderness trails and see wildlife from a boat, while also learning about the unique culture of Hokkaido’s indegenous people.

Experience Geisha Culture

Geisha are a big part of traditional Japanese culture, entertaining guests during meals with music and dance. Walk through Kyoto’s Gion district to see traditionally dressed geisha, both Geiko (full-fledged geisha) or Maiko (apprentice geisha) at private restaurants and on the streets.

Sample a Zen Buddhist Vegetarian Meal

In a tucked away quiet space within a Buddhist temple, sit down to a traditional vegetarian Japanese meal. The Zen meal features healthy ingredients prepared in the Kyoto style, and savouring it in the serene environs of the temple is an added bonus.

Private Onsen Bathing

Natural hot springs are strung across Japan, and the country has harnessed the healing properties of these mineral-rich waters at onsen, or hot spring baths. You’ll find modern resorts and remote rock pools, all of which will soothe your aches, revitalize your skin, and relax your mind.
